Gardens created with a simple, uncomplicated, harmonious design, to bring out the best in nature and focus attention on it. Designs of sections and landscaped curves that model and soften the lay of the land, generating a sense of continuity and of tranquillity. There are 22 gardens illustrated in this book: 16 of them are private gardens distributed in every one of Italy’s different climate zones, three adorn corporate facilities (Loro Piana, Kartell and De Padova), one is a winter garden, one is a banking centre and the last is in the Cloisters at the Abbey of Mirasole. Altogether, they demonstrate how a well-designed garden not only translates into a scene of stunning visual impact, but also ensures economy of maintenance and future evolution. Some of these gardens feature sweeping open spaces of lawn, ideal for mechanical mowing, while others have clumps of trees and shrubs dotted artfully here and there to create shields that protect from the wind or shield against unattractive views. Like the dense curtain of deciduous trees and evergreens designed and planted forty years ago in the Sculpture Garden: photographed now, it displays all the splendour of vegetation that has reached luxuriant maturity. In the last part of the book, a regest of works by classified by categories narrates the story of fifty years of working to build gardens.

Elena Balsari Berrone After graduating in architecture from Milan Polytechnic in 1945, immediately after the war, Elena Balsari Berrone was one of the founder members of AIAPP, the Italian Association of Landscape Architects. Since 1972 a member of the International Jury of the competition for "New Roses" organised by the Rose Garden at the Royal Palace of Monza, she is a member of the Milan Soroptimist Club in the "Garden Architect" category and has worked as a landscape architect with many of Italy's most celebrated architects and designers. Chiara Curami Balsari As soon as she had graduated in architecture from the University of Genoa in 1981, Chiara Curami Balsari started working as a landscape architect in the partnership with her mother Elena where she is still active to the present day. A member of AIAPP, she has held seminars at the Agrarian School in Monza, at the ISAD – Higher Institute of Architecture and Design, at the Flormart in Padua and at the Architects’ Guild of Milan about the topic of gardens and landscapes. She is a member of the Lombardy Regional Register of Inspectors of public vegetation works. Giancarlo Antonio Gardin At the root of Giancarlo Gardin’s obsession with images is his love of painting, which blossomed at a very early stage into his decision to make a profession of his photography. He started photographing the gardens designed by Nena and Chiara Balsari as long ago as 1987 and his documentary record has continued at intervals right to the present day, creating a photographic archive spanning twenty years: a work in progress that also records the advances in photographic techniques, passing from large-format colour film to professional high definition digital sensors. Disegni di sezioni e di curve di livello che modellano e addolciscono il terreno a creare un senso di continuità e di pace. Nei 22 esempi illustrati nel libro di cui 16 sono giardini privati sparsi in tutti i climi d’Italia, tre stabilimenti-Loro Piana, Kartell e De Padova -, un Giardino d’inverno, un Centro Bancario, il Chiostro di Mirasole, si può vedere come un progetto ben disegnato sia efficace non solo sul piano scenografico, ma anche per l’economia della manutenzione e dell’evoluzione futura. Grandi spazi aperti a prato da falciare meccanicamente, arbusti e alberi raggruppati a formare quinte, ripari dal vento o dalle viste indesiderate. Come la fitta cortina di latifoglie e sempreverdi, progettata e disegnata quarant’anni fa nel “Giardino e le sculture”, che, fotografata oggi, mostra una vegetazione arrivata in tutta la sua splendida e rigogliosa maturità. Nella parte finale un regesto delle opere, diviso per categorie d’intervento, racconta la storia di oltre cinquant’anni di giardini realizzati. Elena Balsari Berrone Laureata in Architettura presso il Politecnico di Milano, nel 1945, subito dopo la guerra, è stata tra i fondatori dell'Aiapp, Associazione Italiana Architettura del Paesaggio. Membro dal 1972 della Giuria Internazionale nei concorsi per le "Rose nuove" presso il Roseto della Villa Reale di Monza, socia del Soroptimist Club di Milano per la categoria "Architetto di giardini", ha lavorato come architetto paesaggista con i più noti progettisti italiani. Chiara Curami Balsari Appena laureatasi in Architettura a Genova nel 1981 ha iniziato a svolgere attività di paesaggista con la madre Elena che continua a tutt'oggi. È socio Aiapp e ha tenuto seminari alla Scuola Agraria di Monza, all'Isad, Istituto superiore di Design, al Flormart di Padova, all'Ordine degli Architetti di Milano sui temi del giardino e del paesaggio. È iscritta all'Albo regionale Collaudatori per le opere a verde pubblico. Giancarlo Antonio Gardin All’origine della sua passione per l'immagine c'è l'amore per la pittura, sfociato ben presto nella scelta professionale della fotografia. Ha iniziato a fotografare i giardini di Nena e Chiara Balsari nel lontano 1987 e a intervalli questa sua documentazione è continuata fino ad oggi, creando un percorso fotografico lungo il ventennio: un work in progress anche nella tecnica fotografica, che dai film a colori di grande formato è passata al sensore digitale in alta definizione professionale.
